What is a Mandala?

Every Monday, I love to post an image on my Instagram of a beautiful mandala that I find online. I call this #MandalaMonday. The images range from beautiful hand drawn art, to mandalas arranged with flowers and crystals. These images are so
wonderful to look at and share, but sometimes I'm asked, "What exactly is a mandala?" Well, I'll tell you...

Mandala is a Sanskrit word which is loosely translated to mean, "circle." In Hindu and Buddhist symbolism, they represent the Universe and are shown in a geometric figure. They are metaphysical or symbolic diagrams for a microcosm of the Universe and the cosmos.

Mandalas are used primarily as an aid in meditation, establishing a sacred space so that the individual may become one with the Universe. With their circular design, mandalas remind us of wholeness and unity. They demonstrate more obviously, the circle of life, with the symbolism that life is never ending.

In the creation of a mandala, the mind is allowed to run freely as a visually appealing and unique circle is formed. The process should come naturally and effortlessly as the mind wanders. Each mandala has its own meaning and significance to the creator, as an intention is set during its creation.

There is no right or wrong when creating your own mandala. You can draw, paint, or even use natural pieces found outdoors to make your own. Just remember, the process should flow together without frustration. Clearly setting an intention is not always necessary during the creation. Just allowing your mind to free itself is enough, this will bring you closer in becoming one with the Universe.

Have you tried making your own Mandala? How did you feel during the process? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. This is lovely. I've always wanted to play with mandalas. I think fall leaves and acorns and such could be lovely tools.
