What to Do on the Autumnal Equinox

Balance and change | What to do on the Autumnal Equinox | Bohemian lifestyle blog | The Wanderful Soul

I am so excited for fall as the Autumnal Equinox will soon be upon us (or spring equinox if you're in the southern hemisphere!) This year, it occurs on Thursday, September 22, 2016. I couldn't remember 100% exactly what an Equinox is, so I did a little research to refresh my memory. If you need a refresher yourself, check out the text below for a small explanation. If not, scroll on down for some advice on how you can bring in the new season, as this is a time for change and balance.

What is the Autumnal Equinox?

The Autumnal equinox is the astronomical event that marks the first day of fall! On the equinox, day and night last very nearly the same amount of time. This occurs the moment the sun crosses directly over the earth's equator, giving us just about 12 hours of day and night. For this reason, it is called an equinox which litterally means "equal night" in Latin.

Many think that we see exactly 12 hours of both night and day, but in reality, the day lasts slightly longer. When the sun sets, light tends to linger. So even with the sun completely out of sight, the day lasts a few minutes longer than 12 hours.

What to Do on the Autumnal Equinox

Since this is an event all about balanceit is a wonderful moment to meditate. Bring back that balance into your own life, especially if you have been feeling a bit off. Fall is a time to be thankful, so make an opportunity to sit outside, enjoy the cooler weather, and reflect. Reflect on the changes that will be made in the future to positively transform your life. Move on from the past and cleanse yourself, ridding yourself of negativity to bring balance to the present.

You may also want to bring balance into your home, which is just as important as bringing it into yourself. You can do this by clearing out items that you no longer find necessary. Refresh your home to cleanse it for the new seasons ahead. Also, as the nights become longer and weather gets cooler, consider how you can bring in the warmth and light into your home. For example, let the sun shine in through your windows to fuel the happiness and positivity.

I hope I brought some insight on what the equinox means and how you can bring in the new season!
